A wall of 54 cardboard boxes, which are painted black with acrylic colours, act as a support to the white chalk drawing. This drawing is very sensitive to any kind of mechanical impact and therefore requires consolidation. In agreement with the artist it was decided to carry out consolidation treatment avoiding any change of appearance.
A solution of 1% gelatine in water was applied with an ultrasonic aerosol device from Becker Preservotec. A singular application of the solution already provided sufficient adhesion of the chalk to the painted support. However, the overall contrast between white chalk and black ground slightly increased due to the effect of a surface cleaning and probably also due to the sinking in of fine chalk particles. Nevertheless, this technique currently represents the only satisfying alternative to other spraying systems and shows the successful application of scientific research to a conservation treatment.
