Already during the first presentation of ‘Liquid Time II’ in 1993 the object had to be modified with makeshift repairs because water was leaking out of the channel onto the floor beneath the installation.
Since then the work has undergone several technical alterations and preventive measures concerning, in addition to the steel construction, above all the work’s electronic and electrical equipment.

In 1997 substantial changes were made at the ZKM to the construction of the water channel.
In order to make the entire construction watertight, a continuous tank was constructed of plastic foil and a demountable plywood frame. All of the metal surfaces that are not visible were treated with rust protection.

In addition, the mountings for the monitors were adapted to better withstand the heavy mechanical loads.
Other measures included, for example, rewiring for both the electrical supply and video cabling throughout the video sculpture and changing the water lighting.
To simplify assembling the object, a mobile bridge crane was built.
In preparation for the fourth presentation in 2004, additional modifications and repairs had to be made.

As so often when dealing with complex, contemporary works of media art, it is necessary to carry out, in addition to conservation measures, modifications that reduce the daily effort of maintenance to a reasonable level. The most important goal, however, was not to alter the external appearance or the message of the work of art.
