While the Installation Handbook was designed to safeguard the integrity of the setting-up process, an inventory of the materials used by Hirschhorn in his 'Doppelgarage' was compiled to ensure strict continuity in this area too. This was done immediately after setting-up was completed. The inventory is in Excel spreadsheet format. It names every object and gives it an inventory number. It also lists the dimensions of the objects, their position in the environment, the materials involved, their condition and other relevant information such as, for example, manufacturer's trademarks. The inventory is fleshed out with extensive photographic documentation. All these data serve to pin down every detail of the environment at the time of its purchase and its first presentation at the Pinakothek der Moderne in March 2005. The data also ensure that changes of any kind – damage, loss or the effects of ageing – can be identified at any point in the future.

The meticulous logging of all 371 objects proved well worth the trouble rather sooner than anticipated. While the exhibition was running, one of the 40 tools – a metal mallet hanging in a designated position on one of the front room walls – was stolen. Thanks to the logging of the trademark and serial number, the Spanish manufacturer of the tool could be identified and exactly the same item purchased. And the reverse is true, sometimes foreign objects appeared in the environment. Here again, the inventory helped to identify the intruders.
