Like paper, film, magnetic tape, or any other physical substrate, the media that digital files are stored on, such as CD-ROMs, floppy disks, hard drives, will inevitably fail. Before this happens, it is important to refresh their contents to new storage media - even if the physical format remains the same (i.e. hard drive to hard drive).
