To say that a work can be duplicated implies that a copy could not be distinguished from the original by an independent observer. This behavior applies to artifacts that can be perfectly cloned, as in digital media, or to artifacts comprising readymade industrially fabricated, or mass-produced components.

The digital submaster is used to make new exhibition copies of the artwork. Eventually, when the format of the submaster approaches obsolescence, it is upgraded to a new format. Conservators such as Pip Laurenson recommend that medium upgrades take place every five years. Duplication thus becomes a strategy of conservation.
