A documentation of a work of music, dance or theatrical performance, which is not specifically made for, or with, the medium video
NIM/Montevideo Subject Descriptions
There are three important strategies regarding documentation of new media art. 1. Print it out (all of the software instructions, especially the artist's code). 2. Document the context. [T]here is legitimate debate over how much context to try to preserve for any given project. Having collected several pieces that have now lost their original context, I regret not having been more assiduous in documenting, by whatever method possible, materials that might have been linked to the work. This would never be the same as a contemporaneous experience, but it would be far better than another '404 object not found' message. It is also part of the cultural heritage that institutions can and should preserve to help provide a context so future generations can better understand and, one hopes, experience this important work. 3. The Variable Media Initiative.
Dietz, 2005, p. 97
For site-specific, performance, and a variety of ephemeral works, the documentation provides a limited access to otherwise distant or inaccessible manifestations. And still other issues of temporality are raised by the realities of conservation, especially the need to replace decaying elements or to update works that rely on obsolete technologies. For such works, decision-making becomes increasingly nonsynchronous with initial production.
Buskirk, 2003, p.15
Use broadly for the gathering and recording of information, especially to establish or provide evidence of facts or testimony. For the organizing and controlling of information, use "information management." For the records of information, regardless of medium or characteristics, either created specifically as records of information or used as such at some time subsequent to their creation, use "documents."
